FIRST-TIMER'S GUIDE TO CINQUE TERRE, ITALY

Cinque Terre was made when Italy decided to show off. Big time.

Imagine five charming villages clinging to the rugged Italian Riviera like colorful jewels against an emerald landscape. It’s glorious, as if they’re practically daring the Mediterranean to knock them off, painting themselves in defiant, joyful colors while they are at it.

Cinque Terre, Italy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. It’s living proof that nature and humanity can both thrive together and create something wonderful.

Forget your rental car – it's adorably useless here. Instead, you'll hop trains whistling through cliffside tunnels, brave ferry rides with salty spray in your face, or conquer ancient mule paths that might just laugh at your comfy sneakers. You'll weave through streets so narrow you could practically share gelato with someone across the way. You'll eat pesto that tastes like pure sunshine and basil, likely grown by farmers who apparently moonlight as mountain goats on those vertigo-inducing terraces.

It's gorgeous, it's a little challenging, and it’s utterly, wonderfully unique. Ready to explore Italy's vertical playground?

The Five Villages in Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre literally means "Five Lands," and each village has its own unique personality and charm.

The five villages – Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – originated between the 11th and 13th centuries, developing as isolated fishing villages and agricultural settlements on Italy's rocky Ligurian coastline. Their steep cliffside locations offered protection against frequent Saracen pirate attacks throughout the medieval period.

Over time, the villages' unique architecture arose from necessity rather than design. The brightly colored, vertically built homes helped conserve land, while the pastel hues served practical purposes, allowing fishermen to identify their homes from the water and marking ownership.

These once-remote communities have since become global landmarks, celebrated for their beauty and cultural significance.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is the largest and most developed of the five villages. Its expansive beaches are a sun-seeker's paradise, with golden sands stretching out beneath pastel-colored buildings.

Tourists can explore the old town's narrow streets, lined with historic churches and local shops, or relax at beachfront cafes that seem to whisper stories of centuries past.

Vernazza

Often considered the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre, Italy villages, Vernazza is like a postcard that has come to life.

Its natural harbor is surrounded by a semicircle of colorful buildings that cascade down to the crystal-clear waters. The village's historic church, perched above the harbor, offers breathtaking views that will make your camera work overtime.

Corniglia

Uniquely positioned atop a rocky promontory, Corniglia stands apart from its coastal siblings.

Unlike the other villages, it's not directly on the sea but requires a scenic climb from the train station. This elevated position offers panoramic views that are nothing short of spectacular, rewarding adventurous travelers with vistas that stretch across the entire Cinque Terre, Italy landscape.

Manarola

Unlike Vernazza's natural harbor or Monterosso's expansive beach, Manarola features a tiny boat ramp and swimming cove carved into rugged cliffs.

Its vineyards are uniquely terraced in steep, ancient stone walls that climb higher than those in neighboring villages, producing the renowned Sciacchetrà sweet wine. Manarola's main street, Via Discovolo, tunnels under buildings before emerging at a spectacular viewpoint, a distinctive architectural feature absent in other Cinque Terre towns.

The village is also noticeably quieter and less crowded than tourist-heavy Vernazza or Riomaggiore, giving a more authentic fishing village atmosphere.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore, the southernmost village of Cinque Terre, is often the first encountered town on the coastal trail.

The village sprawls along a steep ravine with two parallel main streets divided by the covered Riomaggiore stream. Its harbor is deeper and more enclosed by towering cliffs than Manarola's modest cove, creating a stunning natural amphitheater.

As the largest of the five towns by population, Riomaggiore offers more dining and accommodation options while still giving the authentic fishing village atmosphere shared with its neighbors.

  • Vernazza primarily offers B&Bs, guesthouses, and vacation apartments, with most rooms boasting harbor or sea views with charming traditional architecture. This is the perfect central base for hikers (connected by trails to neighboring villages); however, it only has limited accommodation options, so you need to book in advance.

  • Manarola is a romantic village ideal for couples, offering apartment rentals and small guesthouses. This is famous for its vineyard terraces and sunset views. It has a quieter atmosphere, too, with excellent restaurants.

  • Riomaggiore has a good mix of budget and mid-range accommodations, with most apartment rentals having kitchen facilities. The village also has a lively evening atmosphere with bars and restaurants, making it popular with younger travelers and groups.

  • Corniglia offers small family-run B&Bs and guesthouses. Its accommodations have lower prices compared to other villages since this is the only village that is perched on a clifftop and doesn’t have direct access to the sea. It is the quietest but gives the most authentic local experience.
